Costa Rica is one of my favorite destinations in the world; it has that ideal combination of heart-pumping adventure plus a laid back, “pura vida” lifestyle. Costa Rica is a wonderful road trip destination because it is safe, fairly easy to navigate, and the terrain changes quickly—so there is a lot to see and do in one compact country. Just be sure to rent a four-wheel drive so you can handle the roads!
I did my own Costa Rican road trip in 2022—here are the four spots I visited that you should add to your road trip itinerary, stat:
1. La Fortuna:
This district in Costa Rica’s northwest is best known for one thing—the Arenal Volcano. We packed in a lot on our road trip stop here, including a hike with sloth sightings and an epic white water rafting trip. We balanced the active adventuring with a luxe villa stay that came complete with an incredible view of the volcano itself. This would be a strong start to your own Costa Rican road trip!
2. Tamarindo:
Your next stop heading south should be this laidback coastal town, famous for its surfing. Catch a wave and then stroll the boardwalk area for entertainment and plenty of delicious dining options. In fact, who knew that I would have some of the best pizza at a place in Tamarindo? And that’s really saying a lot coming from a Jersey girl!
3. Jaco:
This is another great beach and surf town with modern amenities and nightlife. It has supermarkets and other stores where you can stock up on road trip supplies. There are casinos and bars to get your drink and dance on if you like a livelier vibe. It was actually my favorite spot in Costa Rica! Plus, you can avoid the wild side of Jaco by staying in the Los Suenos area outside of town, home to a five-star luxury resort and phenomenal golf course. We stayed at the all-inclusive Marriott resort there and loved it.
4. Manuel Antonio:
This national park on Costa Rica’s central Pacific Coast is the ideal way to cap off your road trip. The lush rainforest is teeming with wildlife—we saw so many monkeys on our visit! If you hike down from the rainforest you will end at a pristine slice of coastline, with secluded beaches where you can live out your castaway fantasies. This is a must-stop for sure.
